Cognitive Distortions - Part 1 Don't have an all or nothing thinking. Stay positive! The following are a couple of examples of an all or nothing mindset: "I didn't get accepted into the university that I wanted so I'm a failure" or "I lost my election because people don't like me." All or nothing is the basis for perfectionism. Such thinking makes you feel worthless because of a failure or imperfection. Absolutes don't exist. It's what we all desire. If you have your purpose, awesome! Keep working on it! If you haven't found your purpose, I have a fun homework for you. Write down 10 things you enjoy doing. Then, write 10 ways you can provide value for others for each of the 10 things you enjoy doing. Next, pick your favorite value and find a company, non-profit organization, or government agency that provides that value and see if you can work for them....
The only way to know whether you'll attain your greatest dream that's very difficult to get is by working at it for a very long time and confronting the negativity that comes with the process. What you want has a high chance of failure, enough to make you very uncomfortable. You'll live on only what you need, spend less time with friends, face negative events and people, and go in and out of darkness facing your demons. Remember, you're expected to fail after all of this....
